NAGAON: An awareness programme on early marriage, gender discrimination was organized by Health and Family Welfare, Nagaon in collaboration with Women Cell and IQAC, Khagarijan College at the college premise on Saturday.
Over 100 students and faculty members attended the meeting. The programme was chaired by Dr Ramesh Nath, principal of the college. Dr Kabita Barua, Additional CM & H.O. (FW), Nagaon, delivered the welcome address and inaugurated the session while the objectives of the programme were highlighted by U C Deka, DEMO, DFWB, Nagaon.
This was followed by an enthusiastic discussion on important issues such as early marriage, gender discrimination and the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao initiative. MC Deka, gynecologist and district immunization officer, Nagaon gave an informative talk on early marriage and its repercussions on the female health - both physical and mental. Dr Shayam Paul, radiologist highlighted various aspects of gender discrimination that plague the society as a whole and corrupt the social fabric, causing detrimental consequences.
Umme Salma, Head of the Department of Economics, Khagarijan College gave multiple insights into the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao initiative of the government which highlights the need for reform at the grassroots level by increasing literacy levels of women in the society.
Following this discussion, Uday C. Deka, DEMO, DFWB, Nagaon gave a valuable insight regarding the PC-PNDT Act 1994 and expressed the impact of the Act in ensuring the safety of girl children. Besides, he gave an overview of the measures taken to keep a strict supervision regarding this matter in Nagaon district. The president of Women Cell, Ajanta Bora Khargahria expressed her views regarding the need for empowering women through education.
