BOKO: The Central Silk Board in collaboration with District Sericulture Office, Williamnagar, Meghalaya organized an Awareness Programme on “Mera Resham Mera Abhiman” (MRMA), aiming to promote Muga and Eri silk cultivation in the region on Tuesday.

The programme was chaired by Dharavath Saicharan, Scientist-B, CSB-SSPC, Kaliabari, Boko, who highlighted the unique potential of East Garo Hills for sustainable sericulture. In his address, Saicharan emphasized the importance of adopting scientific practices in Muga and Eri rearing to improve productivity and income, stating, “Our goal is to make silk farming not just a tradition but a profitable livelihood for our farmers.”

The Nodal Officer and District Sericulture Officer, S.G. Momin, Deputy director & in-charge, DSO Williamnagar, underlined the socio-economic benefits of silk farming, especially for rural women and youth. She encouraged farmers to take advantage of the training, demonstrations, and field visits under the MRMA campaign.

The chief guest, Tochrina R. Sangma, MCS, BDO, Samanda Block, addressed the gathering, stressing the role of community participation and government support in making East Garo Hills a hub for high-quality silk production. The programme also saw enthusiastic participation from local farmers, who interacted with experts and shared their experiences.
