LAKHIMPUR: An awareness-cum-sensitization programme on 'The Rights of Person with Disabilities Act, 2016' was held in Lakhimpur on Wednesday. The programme was organized by the Office of the Commissioner for Person with Disabilities, Assam, in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Lakhimpur, at the conference hall of the same.

The awareness programme was attended by Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, District Development Commissioner Manoj Kumar Baruah, departmental heads, CDPOs of the district along with the other employees of the Social Welfare Department.

Attending the event as resource person, Debeswar Borah, the Commissioner for Person with Disabilities, Assam, interpreted The Rights of Person with Disabilities Act, 2016. "According to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, enacted on December 28, 2016 and which came into force from April 19, 2017, disability has been defined based on an evolving and dynamic concept. The types of disabilities have been increased at present to 21 from the previously existing 7. The Government of India as well as the Government of Assam has initiated different steps to safeguard the rights of the persons with disabilities so that they can enjoy their rights like the common citizens," the Commissioner said. He further appealed to all concerned to ensure the due facilities for the persons with disabilities in the government offices. He also urged upon all to make arrangements to educate Divyang children through inclusive education. He called upon the health department to initiate timely steps to provide Disability Certificates to the Divyang people so that they could avail the benefits of the Unique Disability Identity Card, provided by the government to each person with disabilities.
