TINSUKIA: An awareness programme on 'Understanding Gender Inclusiveness' was organized by the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in association with Cell for Women's Studies and Development (CWSD) and Students' Union of Tinsukia College recently. With the objective of imbibing a sense of recognition and responsibility to promote gender equity within and outside the college campus, 23 students of the college were inducted as Gender Champions by adorning them with badges. The Gender Champion Club, as mandated by the UGC, was formally inaugurated by noted gender activist and social worker Rituparna Neog and the Principal, Dr. Surjya Chutia in presence of more than 200 students, teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. The students from neighbouring colleges and members from Drishti - Queer Collective, Dibrugarh also attended the programme.

In her address, Neog spoke on the socially constructed concept of gender and its relation with patriarchy. She further highlighted that as gender had always been at the root of gender injustice, violence and harassment, society has to be progressive in accepting all genders with empathy. The programme ended with an interactive session wherein queries of students and teachers were addressed by Neog.
