DARANGIRI: A baby wild elephant was stuck in the mud in a paddy field and later died in Sesapani Bainpara village under Dudhnai LAC in the Goalpara district on Thursday.

People of the area said that a herd of wild elephants came to that paddy field in search of food. Around 70 wild elephants were in the group. People suspect that while the group was coming, somehow the baby elephant got stuck in the mud. On Thursday morning, people in the area saw the baby elephant and somehow they rescued the baby elephant and called the state forest department. After a few hours, the baby elephant died.

A forest official said, "The baby elephant died because of weakness. We called the veterinary doctor for a post-mortem and after the post-mortem report is out, we will know the actual cause of death." "The baby elephant was around two months old and it had come with a herd," he added. Local people and the forest department staff later buried the elephant near the incident site.

Local people alleged that the forest department did not take any action against the herd of elephants and as a result hectares of paddy land were destroyed by the herd. The herd of wild elephants also destroyed many houses, schools and other government properties.
