DOOMDOOMA/TINSUKIA: After bought leaf factories refused to accept green leaves from small tea growers of Baghjan locality having traces of condensate released from the oil blowout, the growers, finding no option, vent their ire by throwing 1,000 kg of green leaves on the main road (Baghjan Tinali) and resorted to protest on Tuesday demanding suitable compensation from Oil India Limited.

Green tea leaves grown in household orchards are the only means of sustenance for poor villagers of Baghjan, Dighal Tarang and Barekuri areas in Tinsukia district. They sell their produce to nearby bought leaf factories. While the seasonal flood considerably damages the tea bushes annually, the lockdown in bought leaf factories left the small tea growers in despair. As the plucking of leaves began a fortnight back, the Baghjan blowout disaster added further woes to the small tea growers of the area.
