'Bajali' Becomes the 34th Full-Fledged District of Assam

GUWAHATI: Bajali subdivision has become the 34th full-fledged district of Assam. This was formally declared as a district by the Assam government on January 12.

Earlier Bajali was a Civil subdivision under the Barpeta district.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Assam Cabinet that was held earlier in 2020 at the administrative staff college in Khanapara, Guwahati.

Meanwhile, 10 officials have been appointed in the new district, and a further 85 posts have been created in Bajali to pave way for a new administration. 

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in a tweet wrote, "Today is a great day for the people of Bajali subdivision as formal notification declaring it as a district has been issued.

I congratulate the people on this occasion. I believe this will pave way for faster development of the educational and cultural hub of Assam."

It needs mention here that the decision to upgrade the Bajali sub-division into a full-fledged district was made by the Government during the month of December when the agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act had reached its peak in Assam.

The people of Bajali sub-division under Barpeta district have been demanding that the sub-division be upgraded to a district for a long time.

The Government's assent to this long-standing demand was met with muted applause as the state was on the boil over the highly controversial CAA and protests were raging across the land.

Further, the Assam government launched the pink bus service for women and senior citizens of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) in Guwahati has begun from Saturday (January 9).

Ashok Bhattaraya, chairman of ASTC on Tuesday inspected the movement of the pink bus to check whether women passengers are facing any problems.

Women and senior citizens are happy with the new free bus service of ASTC and they urged not to stop the service after a few days.

The 'Pink Bus' service has been launched under the 'Bhraman Sarathi' scheme.

Currently, a total of 25 pink buses have been running in the city and it is expected to increase the number of buses in the city along with the other districts of the state in the future.

The Assam State Transport Corporation kept the buses pink in color so that women and senior citizen can easily identify the special free city buses easily.
