Goreswar: With a view to avoid panic among the public with regard to the final NRC publication on August 31, an awareness meeting was organized by Baksa district administration in association with Tamulpur civil subdivision at Goreswar circle office on Wednesday.

Bhaskar Pegu, Deputy Commissioner of Baksa, while addressing the awareness meet, said that the process of updating of NRC in the State was being carried out by the Register General of India and the Supreme Court. “Exclusion of names in NRC does not mean that he or she is being declared as a foreigner. Only Foreigners Tribunals are empowered to declare a person as a foreigner. A person will get adequate time to prove himself as an Indian citizen. All together 400 Foreigners Tribunals will be set up in the State shortly at convenient places so that filling and hearing of appeals is done smoothly and efficiently,” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner also said that the State Government would also make necessary arrangements to provide legal aid to the needy people excluded from final NRC by providing all assistance through the District Legal Service Authorities (DLSA).

Sujit Baglary, SDO of Tamulpur civil subdivision, attending the awareness meet said that persons left out of the final NRC would not be detained under any circumstances till the Foreigners Tribunals declare their decisions.

Ashima Kalita, SDPO of Tamulpur, said that the persons excluded in the final NRC would get all rights and facilities from the government. They will not be deprived from any government schemes till they are declared foreigners by the Foreigners Tribunals. She also urged the gathering to maintain peace and harmony and not to heed at any rumour.
