LAKHIMPUR: Flaying the lackadaisical attitude on the part of the district administration as well as Dhemaji MLA Dr. Ranoj Kumar Pegu towards implementing development activities, the Dhemaji district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) constructed a bamboo bridge over River Moridhol at No. 2 Jamuguri village.

No. 2 Jamuguri village, which is located only seven kilometre away from Dhemaji town, has been eluded from due developmental activities during the 73 years of post-Independence period. The village has been allegedly deprived from the benefits of the developmental schemes adopted by the government. No bridge or culvert was constructed over River Moridhol which flows through the village. As a result of it, the people of the village had to go to other places by crossing the river through long poles of bamboo laid across the river. The main road leading to the village is still in a dilapidated condition due to which the people of the village have to walk through mud and water while going to other places. Thus, the people of the village along with some other villages like Chenimai, Laloong Gaon and Kalpanapur have to perform their day-to-day activities by crossing the river through the bamboo poles.

No permanent bridge has been constructed over the river till date, though existing Dhemaji MLA Dr. Ranoj Kumar Pegu and Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah promised the villagers before the election of doing so. All their promises have gone in vain. Finding no other way, the villagers informed their issues and the miserable plight of the village to AASU central committee vice-president Chittaranjan Basumatari. Then, as per his suggestion, Dhemaji district AASU members visited the place and initiated steps to construct a bamboo bridge over the river in the village. As a result of it, the members of the organization, led by district president Dipak Sarmah and general secretary Kalyan Gogoi, extending their labour and monetary contribution, along with the village people, constructed the 40-foot long bamboo bridge over the river on Tuesday.

Taking active part in the programme, Dipak Sarmah and Kalyan Gogoi criticized Dr. Ranoj Kumar Pegu for his alleged failure to construct the bridge as per his poll promise. They demanded him and other political leaders of Dhemaji to quit politics by admitting their failure with regard to raising their voice in the assembly to resolve the burning problems of the district. On the other hand, Dhemaji regional unit AASU president Jayanta Borgohain and general secretary Karunjyoti Chetiya demanded to construct a permanent bridge over the river at the mentioned place or to face protest.
