HAFLONG: The Bangali Parishad Assam, Dima Hasao District Committee, has strongly condemned the violence, vandalism, and attacks on innocent people reported during the Khasi Students’ Union agitation in Meghalaya on August 19. In a statement, the organisation expressed particular concern over the alleged vandalism of statues of two revered national figures, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda, during the agitation. The district committee said that no movement or protest should be allowed to turn violent and stressed that grievances and demands must be raised through peaceful and democratic means. It said that the incidents have tarnished the values of a civilised society and created a disturbing situation in the state. The organisation welcomed the Meghalaya administration’s reported action in connection with the incidents, saying prompt and stringent measures were necessary to maintain peace and uphold the rule of law.
