Bangladesh Commissioner’s visit to Dhubri shrouded in mystery

DHUBRI: Dhubri district administration has taken a serious exception to the visit of the Bangladesh Assistant Commissioner to Dhubri International River Port and inauguration of goods transportation through this port between India and Bangladesh on Thursday as the district administration was kept in the dark about it.

“Dhubri district administration did not know about the meeting and subsequent inauguration of river transportation by Assistant Commissioner of Bangladesh High Commission in Guwahati, Dr. Shah Mohammad Tanvir Mansur. It is a serious break of protocol that the administration concerned was not only excluded from the programme but also not informed it,” a source in the administration said.

The source said that Dhubri is a border district town and the visit by any foreigner to the town or district should have been informed through the proper channel of administration well prior to the visit to the district. “It is a matter of security and national integration as Dhubri is a sensitive district from security point of view and the district administration is keeping a close eye and watch on every movement and development, and in such a situation if a commissioner visits and holds a public meeting at Dhubri River Port then the matter becomes very serious,” the source informed.

The source added that a senior official reprimanded the organizer of the programme at Dhubri Circuit House and asked them to refrain from doing such things next time.

People of Panchu Ghat near Dhubri River Port who attended the meeting also resented the fact that the commissioner’s speech had a lot of references about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

“The commissioner has no business to do politics here as Assam is boiling and his comment on the issue will further create a problem for the district administration. His speech should have focussed on how to strengthen the trade and commerce between two countries through river transportation but he crossed his limit, which is not acceptable to us. We appeal to the Dhubri district administration to take up the matter at a higher level to stop its recurrence in the future,” said people.
