SILCHAR: The Barak Democratic Front (BDF) and Bangali Naba Nirman Sena on Tuesday lodged an FIR against Prashanta Chakrabarty, general secretary of Bangla Xahitya Xabha, Assam, for allegedly making false, fabricated statements on the establishment of Assam University. The BDF further alleged that Chakrabarty had insulted the people of the Barak Valley by mentioning them as ‘backboneless.’ They demanded an unconditional apology from Chakrabarty. On the other hand, Barak Upatyaka Matribhasha Surakaha, in a letter to the Chief Secretary of Assam, demanded immediate rectification on the state government website, where it was mentioned that Assam University was a result or outcome of the Assam Accord.

On May 19, Chakrabarty, along with a delegation of the Axam Xahitya Xabha, attended a seminar at Assam University. The seminar was organized to pay homage to the 11 language martyrs who were gunned down by the state police on May 19, 1961, during the Language Movement at Silchar Railway Station. Chakrabarty, a teacher at Cotton University, in his speech said that the central university in Silchar was an outcome of the Assam Accord. This statement triggered mass protests in Silchar as various organizations alleged that Chakrabarty, with ill intention, had tried to distort the history of Assam University, which he said was actually an outcome of the long agitation of the people of the Barak Valley since 1972. On Tuesday, the BDF leaders said that they had asked Chakrabarty to tender an apology in public, but he did not respond positively. Hence, they lodged an FIR seeking the arrest of Chakrabarty.

Matribhasha Suraksha Samiti’s letter to the Chief Secretary elaborated how in the Parliament, the then AGP MPs had vehemently opposed the bill for the establishment of a central university in Silchar. AGP members like Dinesh Goswami had even walked out of the Lok Sabha in protest against the bill, the letter underlined.
