Beef Meat Supplier Arrested in Bongaigaon, 25 kg Meat Recovered

GUWAHATI: Sensation prevails in Hapasara-Sidalsati, Bongaigaon following the recovery of beef meat from an illegal supplier.

The local people caught red-handed the supplier along with 25 kg beef from him while he was on way to sell the same in two hotels in the Hindu community dominated Hapasara area.

The supplier, who carried the beef illegally on his motorcycle, was identified as one Abdul Hamid.

In the meanwhile, the local police arrested him and during the interrogation, he confessed that he has been supplying beef to two hotels in Hapasara, frequented by local Hindu people.

"Hindu community people used the hotels as eateries. So, we demand strict action against the owners of the hotels along with the beef supplier,'' local people said.

During the last Assam assembly session, the state government passed the new Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021.

Local people demanded the closure of the hotels which bought beef from Hamid.

Earlier, the Allahabad high court has advocated that cows should be declared as the national animal of India. A single-judge bench of Justice Shekhar Yadav said cows have a long history in Indian culture and that the Centre should come up with framing regulations for their protection across the country.

The government should place a bill in Parliament so that cows get fundamental rights. Also, strict laws should be made for the punishment of those who are found harming the animal. Cows should be declared as the national animal of the country, Yadav said.

The high court made the observation in connection with a hearing at the court regarding the bail plea of a man who was arrested under the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act. The court rejected the bail of the arrested man and made the statement advocating for "national animal" status to cows.
