GUWAHATI : Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu is a harvest festival celebrated in Assam Northeast, India. The festival implies the end of harvest season in the month of Magh (January - February).
Several activities are done during the bihu festival in the state. People prepare delicacies of different sort like Laru, Pitha, Doi-Seera and so on. A Meji is also burnt as a ritual and prayer to the God of Fire. The Meji, also known as the Bhelaghar is made of bamboo and leaves.
People gather and enjoy a meal in the bhelaghar during the evening and burn the huts in the early morning. Participants dances and sings during the celebration and also contest games such as tekeli bhonga and buffalo fighting.
Tekeli bhonga is a game where an individual has to break a pot with his eyes blindfolded. This year, the Magh Bihu will be celebrated on the 15th of January and Uruka on 14th.
