LAKHIMPUR: “Bholanath Barooah was not only a businessman, he was sincerely committed to Assamese society, culture and literature. He had played a remarkable role in the acceleration of the Renaissance of the Assamese community during the colonial period,” said Dr Arabinda Rajkhowa in Lakhimpur.

Dr Rajkhowa, a columnist and eminent literary critic, said so while delivering his lecture as resource person in a lecture event organized by Department of Assamese, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) on the occasion of the centenary death anniversary of Bholanath Baruah on Tuesday. Dr Rajkhowa delivered his lecture on a topic, ‘Socio-political scenario of colonial Assam and Bholanath Barooah’ and explained the historical importance of this noted Assamese personality.

In connection, the resource person explained about the contributions of Manik Chandra Baruah, Jagannath Baruah, Radhakanta Hundique, who strengthened the very foundation of the Assamese nationality with their philanthropic aids and donations after being rich by their entrepreneurship and business in colonial Assam. Dr Rajkhowa also displayed several rare photographs of the 19th century in the context of his lecture.

The lecture event was chaired by Associate Professor Dr Dhana Ranjan Kalita and held under the management of Assistant Professor Prakash Jyoti Saikia. Another resource person, Dr Dhiraj Pator explained about the scenario of the commercial sector of Assam during the colonial period which was formed on the basis of the economic system of England. Dr Pator also explained how Bholanath Barooah, who hailed from Puranigudam in the Nagaon district, achieved fame as an entrepreneur even on an international platform. Dr Pator said that Bholanath Borooah had donated the whole amounts of money to set up the Prince of Wales Institute of Engineering and Technology (POWIET) in Jorhat and B. Barooah College in Guwahati and this attitude was the clear reflection of his commitment to the Assamese community, literature and language.

Dr Dhana Ranjan Kalita said that the students of the Department of Assamese of the college would be benefited with the discussion about a personality like Bholanath Barooah and it would add to their studies.
