GUWAHATI: Representatives of the state administration visited Bidyasing Lekhte's family in Karbi Anglong and announced several relief measures for the family of the fallen forest guard.

According to reports, Jogen Mohan, the Minister of the Department of Hills Area Development and Tuliram Ronghang, the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council visited the family of Bidyasing Lekhte. They announced several relief measures for the family.

The Hills Area Development Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakhs while the Chief Executive Member pledged an additional Rs 5 lakhs. In addition to that, the widow will also get a government job as Bidyasing Lakhte while doing his duty. And the family will continue to receive his salary till the date of his retirement according to age-related regulations.

The state government had already announced a sum of Rs 5 lakh each to everyone who died in the incident.

A total of six people including Bidyasing Lekhte died in an incident that took place last week. Following the capture of a truck loaded with stolen timber in Assam, locals of a village in Meghalaya attacked a combined team from Assam's Forest Department and Assam Police. One member of Assam's forest services died on the spot while another Assam Police personnel was seriously injured.

Miscreants across Meghalaya started attacking vehicles registered in Assam following this incident. So Assam Police had to stop all such vehicles from entering Meghalaya for a week. Even the drivers of fuel tankers decided to call off their services in the state out of fear of attack. It was resumed when Meghalaya Police was told to give escorts to vehicles carrying essential products after several locations faced shortages of fuel and essential services. Several Assamese drivers who were already inside Meghalaya reported that they were mistreated and attacked by miscreants.
