Bikali College, Goalpara Student Booked on Sedition Charge

Goalpara: Mofidul Hussain, a BA 1st-semester student of Bikali College of Dhupdhara in Goalpara district, was arrested early on Sunday morning for his alleged anti-India stand and for sharing a photo of the Pakistan military on Facebook.

“He was picked up last night and after interrogation arrested in the morning,” confirmed SB Sarma, Superintendent of Police. Hussain, son of a farmer and resident of Ambari village bordering Kamrup district, shared the photo which glorified the Pakistan army on April 8. But it was only on August 31 that the matter was brought to the notice of the police by a section of netizens.

Significantly, Bikali College student was apprehended on the day the final NRC was published in Assam where more than 19 lakh people’s names were excluded. Goalpara district was under the hawk’s eye of eight additional company of central forces specially deployed for NRC final publication, besides the normal deployment of police and paramilitary forces.

“We have registered a case, no. 133/19 under Sections 124 A and 121 of Indian Penal Code,” informed Nilkamal Sutradhar, officer-in-charge of Dhupdhara police station. Section 124 A refers to Sedition, which includes disloyalty and all feelings of enmity against the country and may bring im­prisonment for life or impris­onment which may extend to three years, to which fine may be added,

On the other hand, Section 121 refers to waging or attempting to wage war or abetting waging of war against the government of India. If the allegation proved, one shall be punished with death or imprisonment for life and shall also be liable to fine.

Sutradhar further added, “Besides the accused, we brought the other family members to the police station for interrogation. The family has a farming background and the other members are almost ignorant about the use of android mobile phones. We let them go.” On Sunday, the police produced the accused before the Goalpara district court and the court in return sent the accused to the judicial custody.
