LAKHIMPUR: The first ever Satajan Bird Festival was celebrated with full vigour and enthusiasm at Satajan wetland under Pohumara Ujanimiri area of Lakhimpur district on Sunday. Brainchild of the Deputy Commissioner of the district, Dr Jeevan B, the festival was held in order to bring the beautiful Satajan wetland area to the notice of the people and encourage public mobilization for the conservation of the wetland as the wetland is the home to around 75 species of migratory and local birds.

The agenda of the event started with the bird watching programme which was flagged off by Dr Anawaruddin Chaudhary, the former Deputy Commissioner of the district and an ornithologist. Starting the event, Dr Chaudhary emphasized upon the positive impacts of bird watching as a hobby and its importance in eco-tourism. On the day as a success, a new bird named Blach Faced Bunting FACED was recorded for the first time at Satrajan. The event was attended by ornithologist Debojit Phukon, Bikul Goswami, Dr. Jaydev Mandal and his team and Firoz Hussain. A bicycle rally with a motto of 'Save Satajan' was flagged off by Superintendent of Police Lognit Terang from the SP office to Satajan area. A painting competition was held among the school children with the theme of 'Save Nature'. A photo exhibition based on bird photography was also organized in connection with the event.

Padma Shri Jadav Payeng attended the event as the chief guest and inaugurated the event by planting saplings of valuable varieties of trees. He emphasized the role of public in saving the precious gifts of nature. He appealed to the public to cooperate with the district administration in making Satajan a no-vehicle and no-noise zone and to develop it as major tourist destination of the district. In this connection, DC Dr Jeevan B, informed that orders were already issued to check the movement of vehicles and noise pollution at Satahan.

"A new road has been sanctioned in lieu of closed road to facilitate the unhindered movement of public and it will be inaugurated by MP Pradan Baruah as part of the festival. A documentary featuring the bird festival, importance of wetlands, avian population and eco-tourism will be released by the District Administration and Forest Department soon," the DC stated. SP Lognit Terang and Circle Officer Khuljit Padun assured that no stone would be left unturned in order to conserve the Satajan wetland.

As part of the festival, an interactive session with Jadav Payeng along with other dignitaries of the programme, such as Dr Prabal Saikia and Debojit Phukon was organized at Lakhimpur District Library auditorium on the occasion. Attending the programme, District Development Commissioner Monuj Baruah laid stress on the role of citizens in making Lakhimpur a hub of eco-tourism and ensuring co-existence with nature as it is the only sustainable way for the human race to flourish. The event was attended by the students of schools and colleges, a galaxy of academicians and public. Dr Prabal Saikia took a detailed informative session about all the bird species found in Satajan area and answered the queries from the audience.

In the painting competition, Nupur Byajan Borah of Valley View School and Sanjay Taid of NL Govt Higher Secondary School bagged the best prize in junior and senior category respectively. The award declared in the memory of Baliram Gogoi by NGO Seujia Lakhimpur was conferred to Ranganadi Prakrati Suraksha Samiti in the same event.
