LAKHIMPUR: A lecture programme on 'The contribution of Padmmnath Gohain Baruah to the national life' was organized in North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) under the auspices of the Department of Assamese, Students' Union of the College and the central committee of Sodou Asom Ahom Sabha on Saturday. The programme was held on the occasion of the birth anniversary celebration of the luminous star of the Assamese literature, the founder president of Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX), who is fondly titled as Xahitya Kandari. Born at Nakari in North Lakhimpur on December 15 in 1871, Padmanath Gohain Baruah has left an indelible imprint on Assamese literary world and social life. He introduced various new trends in the Assamese literature as a novelist, dramatist, poet and noted journalist.

Under the management of Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa, the Head of the Department of Assamese, the programme began with the lighting of ceremonial lamp by Principal Dr. Biman Chandra Chetia and a Borgeet presented by Priyanka Hazarika. Dr. Chetia also delivered the welcome address while Inspector of Schools, Lakhimpur, Kamal Jyoti Gogoi inaugurated the programme.

Academician-cum-litterateur Dr. Bhupen Saikia attended the programme as chief speaker who delivered an informative lecture on the stipulated topic. The chief speaker highlighted Padma Nath Gohain Baruah as novelist, dramatist and textbook writer-compiler in addition to throwing light on his role on the politics of the State. Dr. Saikia informed that his novel — Kandari, based on the life of Padma Nath Gohain Baruah would be published very soon. It is expected that the new novel on the pioneer figure of the Assamese literature and language will reveal new aspects about him.

Writer-cum-columnist Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa put forward various aspects of the life and works of Padma Nath Gohain Baruah. He lamented that the luminous literary figure had not been discussed widely across the State despite his praiseworthy contribution towards the Assamese language and literature. Attending the programme, Sodou Asom Ahom Sabha Sivasagar district president Jayanta Rajkonwar, dignitaries Debojyoti Gogoi, Rekhamoni Dutta Borah also spoke on the occasion.
