Birth Anniversary of Srimanta Sankardeva Celebrations Conclude in Tangla

TANGLA: The 571st birth anniversary of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva was observed with a five-day-long programme from October 8 to October 12 at Srimanta Sankardev Xatra, here with great religious fervour and devotion. During the five-day-long celebration, different competitions including quiz, Borgeet, Diha naam and Xattriya dance were organized.

The concluding day’s programme began with a religious procession on Saturday morning. In the open session, president of the celebration committee Likhan Das delivered the welcome speech. Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimari in his speech exhorted the young generation to imbibe the philosophy and teachings of Sankardeva.

“Sankardev was a legend of Assam. Assamese without Sankardeva is a life without soul and when the greater Assamese society preach Sankardev’s teachings only then the world will recognize him,” said Daimari. He also exhorted the authorities to include Sankardeva’s books and articles in libraries and the syllabus at the primary level.

Former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta also stressed on the need of imbibing the essence on teachings and philosophy of Sankardev. “Every religion has a sole purpose of reforming mankind; paths are different, but the destination is one”, said Mahanta. “The Assamese society is empowered with the rich contributions of Sankardeva,” he said.

Noted writer and critic, Mayur Bora also addressed the session where he dwelt on the life and teachings of Sankardev. The event was also attended by Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia, Paneri MLA Kamali Basumatari and Mangaldai MLA Gurujyoti Das.
