Dibrugarh: As part of its awareness generating programme on the importance of voting among the electorate here and thus ensuring maximum participation in the world’s biggest democratic elections, Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation Cell declared noted social activist, Biru Kumar Singh, as ‘PwD (Persons with Disabilities) Icon’ on Wednesday.

At an event held at the office of the District Social Welfare Department, the said title was conferred on Singh as an effort towards calling upon the people facing physical disabilities to exercise their political right of voting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In his speech, Jha admitted that there was much less representation of such people in different spheres of society. He, therefore, urged such people to come out, exercise their franchise, and play a part in bringing a responsible and responsive government to power, one which would take steps in favour of the specially-abled people.

The event was also attended by District Social Welfare Officer, Jyotirekha Borgohain who shed light on certain arrangements made by the district administration to help such people cast their valuable votes.
