Biswanath Chariali Nagarik Santha meeting opposes delimitation of constituency

BISWANATH CHARIALI: A public meeting vehemently opposed the proposed delimitation of Biswanath Legislative Assembly Constituency. The meeting was held on Tuesday under the aegis of Biswanath Chariali Nagarik Santha with Apurva Kumar Das in the chair to discuss the issue as mentioned in the draft of Constituency Delimitation, 2007. The news of delimitation was published recently in a section of media.

Explaining the objectives, Bidyut Sharma, secretary, said that Biswanath Legislative Assembly Constituency would be merged with Chatiya and Baghmara and the historical name 'Biswanath' would go extinct. The speakers present in the meeting strongly opposed the draft prepared by the Delimitation Committee and observed that the issue must be brought into the notice of the Chief Minister, MPs and MLAs of the State. Biswanath MLA Pramod Borthakur informed the meeting that the issue had already been discussed with the Chief Minister and the deletion of the name of Biswanath would not be accepted at any cost. He also said that the delimitation process could not be executed unless and until the work on NRC was over in the State.

Social worker Goutam Borah said that the issue was thoroughly discussed with the government at Dispur earlier, but it was unfortunate that no action had been taken. Senior citizens Dr Nityananda Gogoi, Bijoy Goswami and Ishvar Bhagawati, chairman of Biswanath Town Development Authority, Mohan Mahanta and others also opposed the draft policy in their speeches and urged the authorities concerned to continue with Biswanath, which was the second revenue town of Assam. The meeting unanimously passed a resolution calling upon the government not to change the name of Biswanath and decided to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam in this respect.
