GUWAHATI: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi responded to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's accusations on Wednesday, suggesting that if his wife Elizabeth Colbourn was accused of being an ISI agent, then he could equally be called a R&AW agent.
Gogoi dismissed Sarma’s allegations, stating that they were an attempt to deflect attention from the Chief Minister's own controversies. He further emphasized that he was unconcerned by accusations from a family with numerous legal cases and allegations.
The remarks followed CM Sarma’s earlier comments linking Gogoi and his British wife to the Pakistani government and George Soros' Open Society Foundation. The Assam CM claimed that foreign powers, led by Soros, had influenced a key decision of the Assam Congress in 2014, and that Gogoi and his wife had suspicious ties with the ISI.
The Chief Minister also raised concerns about the refusal to take Indian citizenship for over 12 years and alleged links to a conversion cartel. Sarma suggested that Gogoi's family was receiving foreign funds to destabilize India, including from Soros, and accused them of attempting to radicalize young minds through connections with the Pakistan High Commission.
CM Sarma emphasized that accountability was essential, stating that simply deflecting responsibility would not provide an easy escape. He urged for transparency and truth, insisting that the nation deserves clarity on these serious allegations.
