Dhubri: A violent clash broke out between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Wednesday during a meeting over the formation of the Golakganj Regional Panchayat, exposing growing friction within Assam’s ruling alliance.
Eyewitnesses reported that the situation escalated quickly when BJP supporters allegedly physically assaulted members of the AGP, leading to serious injuries for some. The confrontation took place within the premises of the Golakganj co-district office, where both groups had convened to discuss the new Panchayat body’s formation. “The AGP members were attacked without provocation,” claimed a witness at the scene. The exact cause of the altercation remains unclear, but tensions had reportedly been simmering over Panchayat leadership positions. This incident comes amid increasing grassroots-level discord between the BJP and AGP, coalition partners in the Assam government.
No official statements have been issued yet by the district administration or senior leaders from either party. Meanwhile, the violent episode has raised serious concerns about the breakdown of political discipline among ground-level workers.
District authorities are expected to launch a formal investigation into the incident to determine accountability and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
