SILCHAR: Amid sharp reaction among workers and supporters, Hailakandi BJP clarified that former Congress MLA Rahul Roy had not joined the party. Biswarup Bhattacharjee and Kanad Purkayastha, two prabharis of Hailakandi BJP in a press briefing claimed that Roy had applied for party membership, but the state committee was yet to give its nod.

Rahul Roy, son of former Minister Gautam Roy on Sunday made a ripple in Hailakandi's saffron brigade as he accompanied an independent candidate for the ensuing civic body poll to the BJP office. There he claimed that since his childhood he was a staunch supporter of the BJP. District BJP president Swapan Bhatacharjee welcomed Roy. Other top district leaders of the party were present there and the way the entire episode happened was clear enough to understand that Rahul had joined the BJP. Rahul was seen sitting in a chair just adjacent to the president. He however hinted that his formal and ceremonial joining would happen in Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati. He further added he would work for BJP in the current civic body poll.

The very appearance of Rahul Roy in BJP office had enough to irk a section of grassroot party workers. They resented the decision of the district committee. Rahul Roy, during Congress regime, engaged himself with innumerable brawls with the BJP workers. Even his father Gautam Roy, an all- powerful minister during Congress rule, joined the BJP but he was not given nomination in Hailakandi as the general sentiment was visibly against the father-son duo.
