BJP government determined to build foreigner-free Assam: CM Sarbananda Sonowal

LAKHIMPUR: “The BJP-led government has been endeavoring to propel the engine of development in the State by taking the indigenous communities in trust and faith and integrating the Barak and the Brahmaputra valleys, plains, and hills. This government has been working with dedication so that all people of the State can live with esteem and dignity. This government has honored the supreme sacrifice of the martyrs of the Assam Movement. Despite such endeavors, the question over our love towards the community and the State is not logical. I am determined and committed to render services for the well-being of ‘Asomi Aai’ (mother Assam) with devotion and dedication,” stated Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Dhemaji on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister made this statement while taking part in the peace rally organized at Rang Satiuwa Pathar by BJP, Asom Gana Parishad, Sanmilita Gana Shakti and other alliance parties of the BJP-led State Government. In the programme, which was held with a view to establishing peace and integration in the State, the Chief Minister underlined the developmental activities implemented under the multiple flagship schemes adapted by the BJP-led alliance government. In this regard, he highlighted the achievements of the social welfare schemes, farmer welfare schemes, women empowerment schemes and severely criticized the successive Congress-led governments for their failure to resolve the burning problems of the State. He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi by saying that the Union Government had granted a package of Rs 42,000 crore, in addition to other multiple packages, for the employment generation and industrial development of the State.

He said that the former Congress-led governments showed utter failure to check infiltration to the State. In this regard, he severely criticized Congress and the leftist parties. “The Congress did not show any respect to the Assam Accord and to implement the conditions incorporated in it. This party generously showed a soft corner to the illegal migrants and rehabilitated them in the State several times. This was admitted by Tarun Gogoi himself in an interview with the electronic media. The Congress and the leftist parties had created anomalies with regard to the update of a fair NRC in the State,” he added.

He further asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Government had taken special attempts to implement the Sixth Clause of the Assam Accord. “The BJP has never neglected the Assam Accord. BJP has placed it in the heart. So the Prime Minister constituted a special committee to implement the Assam Accord to safeguard the indigenous people. Had the members of that committee extended support to the government, success could have been achieved before with regard to the implementation of the Assam Accord,” he added.

The Chief Minister appealed to the people to oppose the propaganda rampant in the State regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019. Addressing the gathering, he ensured that there were provisions for no foreigners to come to the State after December 31, 2014.

In this regard, he called upon the agitating organizations to extend their co-ordination to bring development in the State by showing a positive attitude to the positive attempts of the government. “The chair of the Chief Minister is not my ancestors’ property. This is a gift by the people of the State with their affection to me. I have no greed for the chair. If anyone has thought that Sarbananda Sonowal wants to bring foreigners with the desire of remaining Chief Minister, they are mistakenly analyzing it. Sarbananda Sonowal cannot do anything against the interest of the State. I am also one of the sons of the soil,” he asserted.

He reiterated that the BJP government was determined to build a foreigner-free Assam. He declared that no foreigner would come to Assam in the future and the BJP government would allow no infiltration in the State.

Attending the event, Assam BJP president Ranjit Dass and State Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarmah also delivered speeches. Then the BJP, AGP and the alliance parties’ activists took out a peace rally in Dhemaji town led by the Chief Minister and the BJP State President. Several ministers, MLAs, and MPs of the BJP took part in the programme.
