DIBRUGARH: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Sunday accused the BJP government in the State of trying to mobilize tea garden workers for the Prime Minister's public rally in Dibrugarh on April 28 by declaring the day as 'paid holiday' for the tea plantation workers.

On April 22, the Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner in a letter addressed to the secretary ABITA Zone -1, BCP and TAI, asked them to instruct all the tea garden authorities under their jurisdiction to declare April 28 as paid holiday in all the tea gardens in view of the Prime Minister's scheduled visit to Dibrugarh.

"With reference to the the proposed visit of the Prime Minister at Dibrugarh on 28/04/2022, you are requested to instruct all the tea garden authorities under your jurisdiction to declare April 28, 2022 as paid holiday in all the tea gardens. Further, it is also instructed that all the tea garden authorities may adjust the above mentioned date declared as paid holiday on any other holiday as working day for the tea garden workers. Action taken may be intimated to the undersigned at the earliest. Matter may be treated as PM visit urgent," the letter signed by Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu stated.

Secretary of AITUC Assam State Committee, Ranjan Chowdhury said, "The Government of Assam, indirectly through the Deputy Commissioner of Dibrugarh, is trying to mobilize tea garden workers to join the rally of Prime Minister at Dibrugarh on April 28. We have not seen such kind of action earlier. I am doubtful whether the Deputy Commissioner is empowered to issue such type of notice."
