GUWAHATI: Six new organisational districts will be added to Assam BJP increasing the number of districts from 39 to 45.

This was announced on the first day of the state executive meeting held at Amingaon near Guwahati, Assam BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita said that the party has a target to increase its member strength in the state to 60 lakh from the existing 42 lakh in the state

"We need to strengthen our party. We have formed the government in the state for the second consecutive term. In our office-bearers" meeting, it was proposed that our organisational districts be increased to 45 from 39 at present.

He further informed that many other decisions will also be passed during the two day state executive meeting held at Amingaon.

Union Minister and former CM Sarbananda Sonowal also dismissed rumours of a rift between him and the present CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and appealed to party workers to spread the good work done by state and central governments.

Union minister Rameshwar Teli, BJP national vice president and Assam unit in-charge Baijayant Panda were also present in the meeting.

Meanwhile, the CEC (Central Election Committee) of the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), on Friday, declared the name of Union Minister and former Chief Minister of Assam -- Sarbananda Sonowal as the party's candidate from Assam in the forthcoming bypolls to the RS (Rajya Sabha). The by-election is slated for October 4. The election to this seat was necessitated following the resignation of sitting Member of Parliament (RS) Biswajit Daimari who is presently the Speaker of ALA (Assam Legislative Assembly).

On September 9, the ECI (Election Commission of India) had declared this date for the polls to six vacant RS seats across five States. Besides Assam, the elections will be held for two seats in Tamil Nadu; and one seat each in West Bengal, Maharashtra, MP, Puducherry. The last date to file nominations is September 22 while the date for withdrawal of nomination papers is September 27. Meanwhile, BJP State president Bhabesh Kalita and senior party leader advocate Santanu Bharali collected the nomination papers on behalf of Sarbananda Sonowal.
