BJP's Krishi Camps to spread the 'right' word on Farm Bills amid Opposition and farmers' protests

Hatsingmari: Amid the uproar and protests by Opposition parties and farmers of certain states against the recently passed farm Bills, BJP workers in different parts of Assam have started organising Krishi (Agri) Camps to create awareness and educate people in the agriculture sector about provisions and benefits of the Bills.

Such camps are being held across South Salamara district. In one such camp the Mandal Committee's District President Adhir Chandra Das, Secretary Ziaul Haq Ahmad, President Krishak Morcha, Saher Ali and Amanur Uddin Ahmad, an election ticket-hopeful from the area were present.

"The idea is to spread the right word about the Bills among the farmers and all those involved in agricultural activities. We are holding similar Krishi Camps across the district," Adhir Chandra Das said.

"We are an agrarian society and these Bills have been brought in to help the farmers. It is important that they understand the benefits of the Bills," President BJP Krishi Morcha, Saher Ali said.

The camps are being organised in the backdrop of farmers in different parts of the country taking to the streets to protest against the three Bills passed by Parliament recently. Massive protests were seen in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu against the Bills.

The Bills cleared are –

  1. The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020. This Bill allows farmers to sell their produce outside the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) notified mandis without paying any levies.
  2. The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020. This Bill would deregulate the production, storage, movement and sale of several products including cereals, pulses, edible oil and onions.
  3. The Farm Services Bill and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill. This Bill deregulates essential commodities like cereals, pulses, edible oil and onions.

The Bills were initially issued in the form of ordinances in June. They were passed by voice-vote in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha amid stiff opposition and walkouts by Opposition parties. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) one of BJP's oldest allies had snapped ties over the Bills terming them as anti-farmer.
