KOKRAJHAR: The Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Mancha (BJSM) has strongly opposed the move of Kokrajhar district administration for acquision of 36 bighas of land in Boro tribal inhabited area in Kokrajhar town for construction of new Circuit House but said that the administration had miserably failed to carry out eviction drive against tribal illegal settlers in government khas lands near Gaurang riverine areas.

In a memorandum to the Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner submitted on Friday, the president of BJSM, Janaklal Basumatary and working president DD Narzary said the Kokrajhar DC had carried out land acquision survey of 36 bighas under Dag no. 497 of Kokrajhar revenue circle in Chandamari area inhabited by tribal people for construction of new Circuit House and now the DC's residence. They said they were against the acquisition of land in tribal inhabited areas for any construction purpose. They said that thousands of bighas of khas land were being illegally occupied by non-tribal people, but instead of evicting them, the district administration had set eyes on tribal land for construction purposes.

The memorandum said there was already a DC bungalow and Circuit House in Kokrajhar town. Besides, there is the Bodoland Guest house, PWD guest house, police guest house, Irrigation guest house, agriculture guest house, Sericulture guest house, CIT guest house with modern facilities in Kokrajhar town. Thus, there is no urgent necessity for construction of another Circuit House and DC bungalow in tribal agriculture land.

The BJSM urged the district administration to stop land acquision in tribal inhabited areas and called for action against illegal settlers in Kokrajhar. They also said that the government should stop 'harassing' tribal people by forceful acquision of land and povide land pattas to them.
