Numaligarh: In protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the Bokakhat unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) waved black flags at State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday in Bokakhat near Numaligarh in Golaghat district.
Himanta Biswa Sarma and other ministers Naba Kumar Doley, Keshab Mahanta and Atul Bora and some BJP leaders had come to Bokakhat for reviewing the arrangements for the Sankalp Samawesh to be held on January 24 at Bokakhat Sports Stadium. The protesters also shouted slogans against Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act when the convoy of the ministers reached near Bokakhat HS School at Bokakhat.
As per information received, a total of 31 AASU activists and more than 10 AJYCP activists were arrested immediately by police in connection with the incident. In a move to halt the situation from escalating further, police took all the arrested activists to Numaligarh Police outpost. Soon other AASU and AJYCP activists gathered outside the Numaligarh OP to demand the immediate release of their mates. After doing paperwork and other formalities, all the arrested AASU and AJYCP activists were released by police.
Bipul Bora, joint-secretary of AJYCP central committee, Manab Gogoi, president of Bokakhat AASU unit, along with other leaders of AASU and AJYCP were present in the protest. Condemning the incident of the arrest of their activists, AASU also staged a protest by burning the effigy of minister Atul Bora near Bokakhat police traffic point on Tuesday evening. Later in the evening, a torchlight march was also carried out through Bokakhat town by various social organizations. Last week a group of social activists and journalists received summon from police regarding various cases under numerous sections. Local leaders from organizations like AASU, AJYCP, TMPK, and JEEPAL received police summon.
