LAKHIMPUR: BJP leaders, MLAs, MPs and the ministers of the BJP-led State Government, who came to Dhemaji on Wednesday to take part in the BJP peace rally, had to face massive protest by protesters of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019.

The activists of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), Asom Jatiyatbadi Yuva Parishad (AJYCP) and many other organizations showed black flags to them as a mark of protest against the BJP-sponsored peace rally organized to outshine the mass agitation against the CAA.

The anti-CAA agitators showed a black flag to P&RD Minister Naba Kumar Doley at Machkhowa of Dhemaji district. Similarly, the agitators showed a black flag to minister Pijush Hazarika, Bihpuriya MLA Debananda Hazarika, Lakhimpur district BJP president Phanidhar Baruah in Dhemaji town despite watertight security arrangement by Rapid Action Force, Assam Police, and CRPF.

Notably, some unidentified miscreants damaged the vehicle of Bihpuriaya MLA Debanda Hazarika. The vehicle of Phanidhar Baruah also got partially damaged in the attack of unidentified miscreants. Dhemaji AASU and other non-violent agitating organizations condemned this kind of violence. The police declared to initiate legal action against the miscreants after identifying them.

However, Dhemaji witnessed a spontaneous bandh opposing the BJP-sponsored peace rally. Commercial institutions remained closed in the district and vehicles remained off the road. The organizations agitating against CAA opined, “BJP’s peace rally cannot bring peace back to the State. Peace will come back to the State only when the CAA will be scrapped.”
