SILCHAR: Opening of a blood bank was a significant stride in the two-decade-long history of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) in Silchar. Inaugurating the blood bank supported by LIC of India, Rotary International, Government of Assam, MEDGENOME Labs Limited, Caring Hearts of New Jeresy, and Mahesh Memorial Trust, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Keerthi Jalli, said blood, an essential part of critical treatment and operation, is mostly needed for women giving delivery to babies, to replenish blood loss in a fatal accident, for patients recovering from acute diseases as has been seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Presently as she said the requirement of blood is met by Silchar Medical College and Hospital and Civil Hospital. She added to say blood bank at CCHRC would go a long way to fill up the hiatus in the availability of blood. Her call to able persons was to come forward and donate blood. She expressed her gratitude to all the donor organisations. Gautom Paul, president of Rotary International, said a blood bank was a long-felt need of CCHRC and he was gratified to donate Rs 75 lakh made available from Global Grant Mission.

M Gora, Regional Manager of LIC India said entire northeast looks towards CCHRC for better treatment of the critical disease and blood is imperative in most cases. LIC takes pride to extend possible help and will do more when called for. Padmasree Dr Ravi Kannan, Director of CCHRC, said the hospital authorities have been trying for long to have a blood bank since the cancer patients in most cases require blood. At last with the support of various agencies, it has become possible.

Aruna Subramaniam of Mahesh Memorial Trust Chennai through video conference expressed her happiness at the blood bank inaugurated at Cancer Hospital located in a remote area of northeast. Prof Girban Biswas narrated his own experience in arranging blood for a critical patient and brought out the importance of such a bank. At the outset, Nilmadhav Das, general secretary of CCHS, expressed his thankfulness to all those contributing towards the making of the blood bank. Vote of thanks was offered by Chairman Dr Sujit Nandi Purkayastha.
