Boat Accident on the Brahmaputra Leaves One Dead

NALBARI: A crash between two boats on the Brahmaputra river caused the death of one person and the injury of three others. The incident was reported from Nalbari in Assam and it happened on the evening of Sunday.

According to the reports, the accident happened between two country-made wooden boats traveling on the Brahmaputra. One of them had about twelve people on board while the number onboard the second one was not confirmed. The one with 12 passengers, was traveling from the Goroimari area of the Kamrup district to the Kurihamari area of the Nalbari district of Assam. And the other boat was traveling in the opposite direction. Local people noticed the accident and mounted a rescue mission immediately with the available resources.

"One person died and three others injured in the incident and the injured persons were rushed to Mukalmua hospital," Simanta Borah, Officer-in-Charge of Mukalmua police station in Nalbari district told.

The deceased has been identified as one Aijul Hoque while the names of the people injured in the accident are reported as Moqibul Islam, Taizuddin Ahmed, and Farman Ali.

"At around 5 pm, the boats collided head-on. One of my family died in the accident and three others were injured," mentioned a relative of the deceased Aijul Hoque.

Boat accidents are not rare happening in the state. Although boats and ferries operating in the major cities of the town need to follow strict safety protocols including an ample number of life jackets, load limit, and engine specifications, there is no way of monitoring the same in the smaller towns located at both the banks of the Brahmaputra.

Last month itself, a boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river in the Dhubri district of the state. At least six people were reported missing during that accident. One of the reported missing was a Circle Officer with the Government of Assam and his body was recovered 72 hours after the accident.
