LAKHIMPUR: Following the bamboo bridge collapse in River Charikorya, another incident of boat capsize, that took place on Wednesday, has once again exposed the real picture of development in terms of communication in Dhakuakhana LAC in Lakhimpur district. In the incident, six school students had a narrow escape.

As per report, the boat capsized in Niboi Jan, a stream in Lesera Pothar village under Pachim Dhakuakhana area under Dhakuakhana Police Station in the morning. Five Class IX students, namely Jonmoni Narah, Ratul Das, Gayatri Das, Abhijita Das, Durlabh Das and one Class VII student, namely Prasenjit Narah, used the boat to cross the stream to go to Pachim Dhakuakhana High School, where they study. Of them, four students live at Lesera Pothar village while the remaining two live in Bhelouguti village. The boat capsized in the deep part of the stream having rapid current. Fortunately, all six students knew how to swim and this saved their lives. However, their textbooks and notebooks were damaged.

Notably, the road communication system to go to Lesera Pothar, Bhelouguti, Bhet-Toli villages under Pachim Dhakuakhana Gaon Panchayat is still very poor. The people living in these villages have to communicate with other places through dilapidated roads throughout the year and cross the stream by boat in the rainy season. Former Cabinet Minister of Congress-led Government-cum-long term MLA of Dhakuakhana and former P&RD Department Minister of last BJP-led Government-cum-incumbent MLA Naba Kumar Doley have allegedly not taken any steps to usher in development in the area in the true sense of the term.
