KOKRAJHAR: The Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) on Monday observed martyrs' day in every primary and district committee across the State of Assam and in West Bengal. The day was observed with hoisting of BSS flag at half-mast. The BSS launched Roman Script movement for Bodo medium since 1972 and Amblaram Boro and Siboram Boro became the first martyrs in the hands of Assam Police. Since then the BSS started to observe the martyrs' day. As many as 15 Bodo people lost their lives in the script movement.

The BSS, after long struggle, accepted the Hindi script for Bodo medium in 2000 at a conference of the Sabha at Simbargaon in Kokrajhar district. The then president of the BSS, Bineswar Brahma took strong initiative in the special delegate meeting to settle the script and opinion/suggestions from all primary and district committees were retaken and finalized. But unfortunately, Bineswar Brahma was assassinated after six months on August 19 in 2000 at Bhetapara, Guwahati by pro-Roman Script support group.
