Body of martyred soldier brought to his native Barpathar home

SARUPATHAR: An Indian Army jawan from Barpathar, Hatighuli under Dhansiri subdivision in Golaghat district, was martyred during a ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC).

The body of Padum Bahadur Shrestha, a soldier killed while foiling an infiltration bid by terrorists from across the Line of Control (LOC) in the Tangadhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, arrived at his native Hatighuli village at Barpathar in Golaghat district on Tuesday evening.

Family members said, “We received a call on Sunday evening about our son’s death.” They said an official told them that he had sustained bullet injuries after Pakistani troops fired at the post along the LoC.

According to family members, Padum Bahadur Shrestha had returned to Kashmir four months ago after spending the holidays with his family. “We never imagined that it would be the last time that we would see him alive,” said the soldier’s mother.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his condolences to the family of the martyred jawan and announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 20 lakh for the martyr’s family.

On the other hand, minister and president of AGP, Atul Bora, Mrinal Saikia, MLA of 96 Khumtai constituency, Roselina Tirkey, MLA of 94 Sarupathar constituency, Dr. P. Uday Praveen, SDO civil of Dhansiri subdivision, Bishwajit Phukan, chairman of All Assam Co-operative Apex Bank, Assam and many other dignitaries visited the martyr’s residence to pay him tribute.
