BOKO: The lifeless body of a young elephant was found in a paddy field located at Nowapara, situated within the bounds of Assam's Kamrup Rural district. This tragic occurrence serves as yet another reminder of the ongoing conflict between humans and elephants that has been escalating within this region.
Upon discovering the young calf in close proximity to a ridge within a paddy field, it remained uncertain as to what had caused its demise. Promptly responding to the alert of this distressing occurrence were forestry authorities who promptly assessed the remains and thus initiated an inquiry into these circumstances leading up to this tragic loss.
After a string of recent events showcasing the dangerous encounters between humans and elephants in Assam, this distressing revelation has come to light. Merely weeks ago, two fully grown elephants met their untimely demise when they encountered an electric wire with high voltage in Karbi Anglong district. This event took place near an east Digaru jungle area arousing apprehension about the safety of local residents as well as that of the magnificent creatures themselves.
In Kampur, Nagaon district, another occurrence took place on the day that a deceased calf was found in Boko. This time it involved an elephant baby who died despite being given medical assistance for its illness. The authorities had sedated and taken the sickly calf for treatment but unfortunately, it didn't survive more than a few hours after transportation.
The forest department has been accused of neglect by the locals, further fueling concerns about elephant welfare in the region. The increasing conflict between humans and elephants has prompted demands for immediate action to tackle underlying causes and develop long-term solutions that ensure safety for both these magnificent creatures as well as people living nearby.
With the unfolding investigation into the death of an elephant calf in Boko, there is mounting pressure on authorities to take comprehensive measures aimed at protecting endangered elephants and promoting harmonious coexistence between these animals and humans in Assam.
