Bonphular Kobi remembered on his 54th death anniversary

SIVASAGAR, July 8: Bonphular Kobi Jatindranath Duwara was remembered on his 54th death anniversary recently. The day was observed under the aegis of Rongpur Xahitya Xabha at the poet's residence at Bonphul Nagar here. A large number of people attended the commemorative meeting. Sunila Duwara, a family member of the poet, lit the ceremonial lamp. Dr Asna Chetia, former Vice-Principal of Sivasagar Commerce College, inaugurated the meeting and said the first Sahitya Akademi award winner from the State was a representative of the Assamese modern poetry.

Speaking as an appointed speaker, Dr Mayashree Goswami of Sibsagar College threw light on the influence of Umar Khayyam, Ivan Turgenev and Heine on Duwara's poems. Noted writer Diplai Bhattacharjya Boruah, in her speech, said Duwara's lyrics were given musical notations by Lakhiram Baruah of Sonari.

Manoj Borthakur, president of Rongpur Xahitya Xabha, presided over the meeting and said Duwara's poems were free of complexities of ideas and images. The meeting was also addressed by Syed Hakiqur Rahman, former Principal of Sivasagar Government HS School, among others. Srimonta Duwara, an entrepreneur, was also felicitated in the meeting.
