SIVASAGAR: A book donation function was organized at Gargaon College on Friday in which a prized collection of books gifted from the private library of Dr Pona Mahanta, eminent litterateur and former Professor and Head of the Department of English, Dibrugarh University to Gargaon College Central Library was formally inaugurated.

Extolling the invaluable contribution of Dr Pona Mahanta to the academic and literary arena, noted academician and Principal of the college, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta extended his sincere gratitude to Dr Pona Mahanta for his altruistic and benevolent contribution to the college library.

Speaking about the need of modernizing the college library, he also appreciated the effort of Dr Pankaj Kr Nath, Librarian of Gargaon College Central Library, for his continuous effort of upgrading the library.

Inaugurating the book collection, Dr Pona Mahanta spoke of his long association with Gargaon College and Sivasagar. Recalling the history of the gradual evolution of Kareng Ghar, he opined that Gargaon College too should keep evolving and move in the path of progress. He remarked that the library of any institution is its soul whose values should be imbibed by the students. Considering the advent of social media and its adverse impact on youth, he also urged the student fraternity to work for the development of Assamese language and literature by practicing to read and write in Assamese.

Dr Pankaj Nath, Librarian of the college, in his address thanked Dr Pona Mahanta for his generosity and opined that the books gifted by Dr Mahanta would definitely enhance the resourcefulness of the library. Dr Rina Handique, Vice-Principal of the college, expressed hope that the college fraternity, including teachers and students, would make proper use of the donated books.
