PATHSALA: At a time when the use of plastic is posing a serious threat to the environment and awareness drive is on by the government and various NGOs to avoid using single-use plastic and instead to use recyclable bags, a paper bag manufacturing small industry was recently inaugurated in the Haripur area of Pathsala.

The small industry has the capacity of manufacturing 60,000 paper bags per hour. “Now that people want to use alternative carry bags instead of plastic bags, the industry will serve the need of the people,” said Anunda Khataniar, brand ambassador of the Forest and Environment Department, after formally inaugurating the paper bag manufacturing industry. He said that the paper for making the bags had been imported from China and the USA and this would be the first such industry in Barpeta district. The paper bags will first be distributed in Barpeta, Nalbari, Rangia, Mangaldai, and Guwahati and then to other places.

Seven people have been employed in the production unit. The price of the single-use recyclable waterproof bag will be Rs 40 to Rs 150 per kg bag.
