MANGALDAI: Synchronizing with the ongoing observation of the breast cancer prevention month and in view of the increase in such cases in the region, AMC Alumni Association and Academic Forum, Guwahati, in collaboration with the Darrang chapter of Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW), organized a breast and cervical cancer awareness camp and free screening test at Ramhari village.

The day-long camp held in the campus of North East Nutrients Pvt Ltd and with technical support from Darrang Cancer Centre, Dr Anjana Phukan Memorial Foundation and Joint Director of Health Services, Darrang, witnessed more than 200 women from eight different villages under Ramhari GP.

A free eye-screening and Covid vaccination was also organized on the occasion. Earlier, Joint Director of Health Services, Darrang, Dr Harpal Sing Suri inaugurated the camp in presence of several dignitaries, including president of doctors' forum, Dr Chandan Baruah, office bearer Dr NK Beria, Superintendent of Cancer Centre, Dr Iftikar Sobhani, Superintendent of Mangaldai Civil Hospital, Dr Arun Nath and others.

Breast cancer survivor Kanan Baruah also delivered a motivational speech while Upasana Deka, secretary ICCW, Darrang explained the objectives of the event. Gynaecologist Dr Harajyoti Deka and surgeon Dr Anupam Sarma sensitized local women about the causes of breast as well as cervical cancer, need of eradicating the social stigma, importance of self-screening for prevention and early detection of breast cancer, its symptoms, methods of diagnosis and treatment for recovery etc.
