BRMGM College students perform well in Dibrugarh University exam
A CORRESPONDENT
DOOMDOOMA: The good performance of the students of the Bir Raghab Moran Government Model (BRMGM) College, Doomdooma in the recently announced results of the first semester final examination of Dibrugarh University (DU), bear testimony to a healthy growth of the newly-established college which is yet to overcome its teething problems.
Against overall pass percentage of 97.07 per cent, 87 per cent students secured first class. Again in Economics, besides the pass percentage being 100 per cent, Rupa Moni Orang - a tea tribes community student - secured 91 per cent, which is yet another feather in the cap of the college.
Established on March 7, 2020 by an urgent government notification, the college had Dr Amarjit Saikia of Margherita College as its Principal as per interview held at Gauhati University (GU) on July 26, 2020 in adherence to strict UGC norms. Immediately after assuming charge from Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Tinsukia, who is chairman of the College Governing Body (GB), on July 31, 2020, Principal Dr Saikia started the process of teachers' appointment as per directive of the then Education Minister. Incidentally, no office staff of the college has been appointed till date.
So the Principal took upon himself the responsibility of publishing the advertisement in newspapers for teachers and employee appointment on August 13, 2020 and after completion of the teachers' selection by holding interview with the help of Doomdooma College, the list was sent for approval to Director, Higher Education (DHE). On the other hand, on receiving directive from the government for starting of the academic session from 2020-2021 academic year, the Principal had to start the process of students enrolment. On September 24, 2020, the DHE opened an online portal for students' admission. By that time, the admission process was over and regular classes started in most of the colleges. Thereafter, as per request of the government, Doomdooma College Governing Body (GB) allowed the functioning of the college in its newly-constructed boys' hostel and transferred 458 students, who were not admitted as regular students, to the new college.
The newly-appointed teachers were given appointment on December 19, 2020 collectively by the then education minister (now the present Chief Minister) at a function in Guwahati. The teachers so appointed joined the service on December 24, 2020 and regular classes were started from January 1, 2021. Incidentally, the boys' hostel has capacity to accommodate 200 students only. As against this, 458 students had to pursue studies in first semester classes of different subjects alternately exchanging the classrooms for the purpose. In the current session another 487 students have been admitted, thus enhancing the total enrollment to 977.
In view of this satisfactory performance of the students coming from poor academic background and underprivileged section of the society, the conscious section of people expect that the government would take prompt action for the well-being of the students in providing necessary infrastructure that a model college should possess.
In the meantime, Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah has offered necessary finance for construction of four temporary classrooms for convenience of the students, said Principal Dr Saikia while acknowledging his gratitude to him.
