GUWAHATI: Defending country’s borders is among the most challenging tasks for any Border Guarding Force. The security of the India-Bangladesh border presents unique and highly complex challenges due to geographical conditions and demographic difficulties.
Recently, there has been a significant increase in the activities of smugglers and cross-border criminals. These smugglers are involved in trafficking of gold, cattle, cough syrup, narcotics, and other prohibited items, operating as part of an organized syndicate in collaboration with Bangladeshi traffickers. With numerous villages situated close to the India-Bangladesh international border in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, Dhubri district & South Salamara, Mankachar and taking advantage of fog and adverse weather, smugglers have attempted to execute their illicit activities by suddenly attacking duty personnel with sharp weapons and sticks, causing severe injuries. The Border Security Force (BSF) is responsible for the security of 509-kilometer stretch of the India-Bangladesh international border from district of Cooch Behar (West Bengal) to South Salmara Mankachar district (Assam). To safeguard this designated international boundary, 11 BSF battalions and a small portion of the Water Wing are deployed.
Despite challenging geographical conditions, particularly during the rainy season, the BSF has achieved significant successes in December 2024, including the arrest of numerous smugglers and the seizure of prohibited materials. The vigilant BSF personnel, with utmost dedication, arrested 11 Indian and 01 Bangladeshi smugglers, seized 2800 Yaba tablets, rescued 437 cattle from smuggling, and confiscated prohibited goods worth approximately 48 lakhs rupees.
It is noteworthy that BSF personnel operate around the clock, enduring adverse climatic and life-threatening conditions while performing their duties in remote areas, often at great personal risk. Apart from this, save precious life and property of civilians during fire broke out in border village of South Salamara Mankachar, Assam and evacuated civilians due to various medical emergency from border to nearby hospitals to save their precious lives.
Given the sensitivity of the border and the increasing activities of smugglers and anti-national elements, BSF personnel are effectively managing border security and curbing cross-border crimes, stated a press release.
