

GUWAHATI: On March 3, members of the Guwahati Frontier Border Security Force (BSF) and the Narcotics Control Bureau in Kolkata conducted a joint operation to eradicate illegal poppy cultivation in the villages of Balasi and Beltapara, which are under the jurisdiction of the Mathabhanga District-Coochbehar Police Station (WB).
The BSF mentioned in a statement that roughly 12 bighas of poppy cultivation were destroyed during the operation, and noted that its forces are constantly on the lookout for concerns with such criminal enterprises and transnational crimes.
In the past, on February 8, Assam Rifles soldiers detained one man and recovered 100 bags of poppy seeds and 10 packs of cigarettes of foreign origin, totalling Rs 1.65 crore.
Assam Rifles destroyed 80,000 poppy plants on January 20 in a joint operation with the Manipur Police and the Forest Department in the Longpi village hill range in the Nungba sub-division of the Noney district of Manipur.
The Assam Rifles stated in a statement that the operation was a part of its anti-drug campaign and that the worth of the poppy plants is believed to be around Rs 10 lakh.
In the Noney area of Manipur, four hectares of opium poppy plants were reportedly eradicated on January 10 by a joint team of the Assam Rifles, state police, and forest department.
A 37 year old Village Defence Force (VDF) Personnel, Ningombam Premananda went missing on 31st of January, while he was on duty.
Unfortunately, on 3rd February, Friday, a team of police found him dead at M Lebanon Village located in Chandel district. Permananda was assigned duty in Phaisi village under Chakpikarong Police Station located in Chandel district.
He was on duty to destruct illicit poppy cultivation in the region. As soon as the department was informed about the matter, a firm team was formed to search for Premananda.
As many as 130 police personnel led by the additional Superintendent of police under Thoubal district, Wangkhomba Okramcha along with additional SP Chandel Amarjit. The search operation team found and recovered Premananda’s body at around 6 pm in the evening.
