BUBSSS hails Bodo language, demands recognition of Bengali

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR: In consonance with the cardinal principle of Assam being a multilingual, multicultural and multiethnic state, it has been quite appropriate to recognise Bodo as the associate language and its application in the proceedings of the current session of the Assembly. Barak Upatayaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan hails it as a historic decision of the government of Assam and hopes similar recognition to the Bengali language spoken by 90 lakh people of the state is also under its active consideration.

Ranjit Daimary, Speaker of the Assembly, has tried desperately for due recognition to Bodo and deserves appreciation. In a letter to him, Gautom Prasad Dutta, General Secretary of BUBSSS, has heaped praise on Ranjit Daimary. This will help in further development and enrichment of Bodo language along with all other languages. After all, one language leads to the enrichment of other language.

According to 2011 census and Linguistic Survey of India, Bengali speaking people constitute 28.92% of the state population. The total population of Bengali speaking people is 90.24 lakh and deserve the status of the second largest linguistic group. The letter in question makes fervent appeal to Ranjit Daimary to consider inclusion of Bengali in the proceedings of the Assembly and accord it the status within the democratic and constitutional ambit.

BUBSSS thinks recognition of a language creates the atmosphere of amity and goodwill among different linguistic groups and helps in the promotion of each other's culture and language. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has committed himself to take the State of Assam to newer heights of achievements in social, economic and cultural fields. BUBSSS too commits itself to extend all possible help in this direction, pointed out Gautom Prasad Dutta.
