SILCHAR: After a long lull, Cachar police once again swung into action as they arrested three persons allegedly involved in the Burmese supari (betel nut) syndicate. Those who had been arrested included Subrata Paul who was absconding for the last few months just after 'Operation Allout' against various syndicates operating in Barak Valley. Police had further arrested Nitu Banik, manager of 'supari mafia' Altaf Hussain Mazumder and another betel nut trader Jakir Hussain Laskar from Dholai. They had been sent to judicial custody by a local court on Saturday evening.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in January last ordered a massive operation against various syndicates operating in Barak Valley. Police had arrested a number of traders allegedly involved in smuggling of Burmese supari from Myanmar via Mizoram. Subrata Paul was absconding since then. On Saturday police arrested him from his residence in Silchar town.

Interestingly amid renewed operation, smuggling of Burmese supari continued in full swing. Reports said, after the check gate of Lailapur in Assam bordering Mizoram was shut down, trucks loaded with smuggled betel nuts started to enter Cachar. On Saturday night Cachar police seized one such truck and confiscated 100 bags of Burmese supari. Police arrested two drivers of the truck. They were identified as Shraban Kumar and Kishan Kumar hailing from Rajasthan.
