NAHARKATIA: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Namrup unit on Tuesday demanded that the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) in Namrup should be covered under the Rs 20 lakh crore economic package announced by the Prime Minister recently.

AASU Namrup unit submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday through Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha. Through the memorandum signed up by Namrup unit AASU president Kalpajit Gogoi and general secretary Ashim Phukan, the student body urged the Prime Minister to cover BVFCL Namrup under the economic package to increase the efficiency of the plant to enhance the supply of nitrogen fertilizer to the farmers of the State.

"The Prime Minister in his recent address to the media had advocated the promotion and strengthening of the local industries. So we urge the government to cover the Namrup Fertilizer industry in the economic package of the Prime Minister to renovate the existing N-ll and DN -lll group of plant," the AASU stated in the memorandum. "It is also essential to lay emphasis to set up the long-pending Namrup 4th plant for long-term perspective to meet the growing demand areas of the farmers of the country," the memorandum further stated. Copies of the memorandum were sent to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Chemicals and Fertilizer Minister DV Sadananda Gowda.
