JORHAT: Activists of CAA Birudhi Oikya Mancha, Jorhat staged a protest in Jorhat on Wednesday demanding repeal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). The organization said that their protest would continue unless their demands were fulfilled.

The activists of the organization, which was formed this year in Jorhat district with the sole aim to demand repeal of CAA, staged dharna in front of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner's office for about an hour. They also demanded fruitful steps to check the sky-rocketing price rise of essential commodities in the State.

President of the organization, Niranjan Mahanta said, "We have taken up our protest programme today in support of various important issues. We demand the government to repeal CAA at the earliest as this Act is a threat to the identity of the indigenous people in Assam."

Mahanta added, "The BJP-led governments at the Centre and the State have failed to check the price rise of essential commodities in Assam. As a result, the people are suffering a lot. We demand the government to take fruitful measures to check the price rise of essential commodities in the State."

The activists of the organization alleged that the BJP was indulging in communal politics in Assam and in the country. "BJP leaders are doing communal politics in the country. Leaders in Assam are also doing the same following the path of their central leaders. It is threat to the unity of the nation and we oppose it. We will never allow them to so and our agitation will continue against these activities of the government," Mahanta added.
