LAKHIMPUR: On the final day of the first phase poll of the 17th parliamentary election to be held on April 11, the candidates and the political parties in fray in the Lakhimpur HPC were seen giving a momentum to their campaign programmes on Tuesday. Voters’ Party International (VPI) organized a mega campaign meeting at Nakari of North Lakhimpur town on Tuesday under the auspices of Lakhimpur HPC Election Committee in collaboration with the Lakhimpur district unit of the political party in support of its candidate Bhupen Narah. Lakhimpur district VPI president Fajlur Rahman chaired the event wherein State president Lalit Pegu came down heavily on the BJP and Congress. He alleged that All India Congress Committee president Rahul Gandhi had borrowed the concept of his Nyunatam Aai Yojana (NYAY) from the ideology of VPI.

“The VPI started its struggle by vowing to pay Rs. 6000 to each of the voters by implementing voter ship which is the legitimate right of the voters. The party has demanded the government to implement it too. The AICC president has planned to win the election by declaring to pay Rs. 72,000 per annum and Rs. 6000 per month under NYAY, to the poorest families of the society if the Congress is voted to power. He has borrowed the concept from the VPI ideology with some nominal changes,” said Pegu.

He criticized the BJP, alleging the party to be a threat to the indigenous communities of Assam. He urged the voters to cast their votes to bring peace and prosperity to the society and for welfare of the poor, not the corporates.

The prominent issues of the party are amendment of the process to elect the Prime Minister, paving the way for reunion of the seven States of the Northeast, closure of life-long pension of the ministers and MLAs, closure of so-called schemes meant for the eradication of poverty and enforcement of votership act in the country. On the other hand, BJP and its alliance parties - AGP and Sanmilita Gana Shakti took out a bike rally in support of their candidate Pradan Baruah in North Lakhimpur town and other nearby places. As many as 300 bikers, led by Lakhimpur district BJP president Phanidhar Baruah and Yuva Marcha secretary Jayanta Saikia, took part in the programme. The supporters of SUCI candidate, Hem Kanta Miri also initiated similar bike rally in the town in his presence. On the other hand, Congress workers were seen doing door-to-door campaigning in support of their candidate Anil Borgohain.
